Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings changed the world of construction and design with its revolutionary iron frame and I am delighted to be able to announce the completion of the first stage of its revival with the opening of the visitor centre.

Client -  Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is known as the ‘grandparent of skyscrapers’. When built in 1797, it was the world’s first iron-framed building, that paved the way for modern-day buildings such as London’s Shard, New York’s Empire State Building, and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

The Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is not a traditional heritage museum project, but a ‘factory of ideas’ designed to communicate the story of the site’s incredible 200-year history to new and local audiences.

Within the experience, visitors can immerse themselves in an engaging exhibition that explains the story of the Maltings, alongside audio exhibits that give visitors a chance to hear from former Maltings workers and their families, or those involved in the restoration project in their own words.

On this project, I worked together with a team of colleagues in creating Tender competition documents, External signage, Activity space & Tour designs, construction drawings and schedules. Mather & Co colleagues Sarah Clark, Heather Garbett, Paul Lee, and Iona Gibson
